Narrator John Lee's deep voice and rhythmic intonation are perfect for this beautiful novel, set amid the harsh landscape of a town with no future, a victim of the two-decade ban on cod fishing off eastern Canada. Moses Sweetland is a 70-year-old crusty inhabitant of the tiny Newfoundland settlement of Sweetland--named for his ancestors. The government has decided to move everyone to the mainland, but Sweetland refuses to go for reasons that are revealed throughout the audiobook. Lee renders Sweetland's laconic and stubborn nature as well as his special relationship with his autistic great-nephew, Jesse. Lee's slightly toneless performance of Jesse captures the boy's deep well of affection but lack of emotional maturity. SWEETLAND is a spectacular meld of story and performance. A.B. The citizens of Sweetland, a remote corner of Newfoundland, have been offered a generous package by the government to relocate. All of the residents have signed on except for Moses Sweetland, after whose family the island is named. As the weeks pass, more and more aggressive measures are taken against Moses to convince him to leave. Lee's accent, English with a touch of Irish, is well suited to the inhabitants of Sweetland, and his narration is ideal for the curmudgeonly yet sympathetic Moses. The continuous narration with few pauses does make it hard to discern the alternating time periods, which could turn off some listeners, but the style gives more weight to the almost stream-of-consciousness nature of Moses' experience, ruminating on the island both in the present and past. This audiobook is a short literary adventure full of well-developed characters, each brought to life by Lee's narration. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

Crummey (Galore) here creates a compelling and epic story of one man's quest to stay on his beloved island off the Newfoundland coast after a government buyout. Moses Sweetland refuses to leave the island his ancestors founded, it holds too many memories and he feels driven to stay for reasons he can't quite articulate. As the island's residents leave, he finds himself reminiscing on his and the town's histories. From the eclectic residents to old traditions, Sweetland finds solace in looking back on the island's past. Soon he's utterly alone, and all he has to keep him sane are his thoughts. The story alternates among the present story, Sweetland's youth, and various other memorable moments in his lifetime. Narrated beautifully by John Lee, who does an impressive job creating distinct voices for all the characters, most notably Moses Sweetland. VERDICT Fans of literary fiction and rugged island life will enjoy this astonishing tale of an old man determined not to let go of the past.—Erin Cataldi, Johnson Cty. P.L., Franklin, IN
